Edward Powell Turner Jr. (August 26, 1929--April 21,2021)

Edward Powell Turner Jr., age 91, died peacefully at his home in Chatom, Alabama, on April 21, 2021.

Ed was born on August 26, 1929, in Chatom, Alabama, to Edward Powell Turner Sr. and Maribeth Tatum Turner. Ed graduated from Washington County High School in 1948; he attended and played football at Southwest Mississippi Junior College and later transferred to the University of Alabama; and he graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1955. Ed served as a pilot in the United States Air Force for three years following his graduation from law school and was honorably discharged as a captain from the Air Force reserves in 1972. He began the practice of law in Chatom in 1958 and practiced with distinction until his retirement in 2017. The law firm Ed founded continues to this day under the name of Turner, Onderdonk, Kimbrough, Howell, Huggins & Bradley, PA with offices in Chatom and Bay Minette.

Ed’s accomplishments during his lifetime are too many to list. Among them, he was a successful and distinguished trial lawyer, also serving as County Solicitor for Washington County, Assistant District Attorney for the First Judicial Circuit, and State Bar Commissioner for the First Judicial Circuit. Ed founded a timber and oil and gas investment company in the 1970s, which continues to this day under the name of Escatawpa River Woodlands, Inc. He loved to hunt, fish, and raise cattle on his farm in Chatom. His grandfather being a founding member of the Chatom United Methodist Church, Ed was a lifetime member of the church.

Ed loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. Ed is survived by his wife, Shirley W. Turner; three sons, Halron W. Turner, Frank C. Turner II, and E. Tatum Turner; a sister, Mary Binion Jones; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at the Chatom Community Center located at 105 Dixie Youth Drive in Chatom. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. that same day at the Chatom United Methodist Church located at 1251 School Street in Chatom. Graveside services will commence immediately following the funeral services at the Chatom Cemetery located at 125 Pear Street in Chatom with The Rev. Dr. Holly Morales officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorials be made to Chatom United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 205, Chatom, AL 36518, in Ed’s memory.
