James Ellis Smith, affectionately known as “Smitty”, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, August 06, 2021. He was 85 years old. Smitty was born October 09, 1935, in Griffin, Georgia. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and Vietnam War, retiring as a Master Sergeant. Smitty was a faithful member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church and he loved gardening, playing dominoes, and bird watching in his spare time. He leaves behind a wife, Sara Smith; seven children, Elizabeth A. Smith, Yvonne Smith-Jeffrey (Adam), Thomas S. Smith (Margaret), Michael A. Smith (Deidra), Mark E. Smith (Autry), Rachel S. Gartman (Ron), and Joseph E. Smith (Becky); twenty-eight grandchildren; fifty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Jamerson; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends 10am until the 11am Mass of the Resurrection Friday, August 13, 2021, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Rev. John Coghlan, celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be given at www.freemancitronelle.com.
